STORY WHY I CHOOSE TENUN PAHANG COMMERCIAL CENTRE FOR MY FINAL PROJECT IN BACHELOR DEGREE INTERIOR ARCHITECTURE OF UITM ,SHAH ALAM
OK LET I SHOW BACKGROUND OF TENUN PAHANG...
Pahang
weave is a type of woven silk fabric which is famous and popular in the state of Pahang, Malaysia.
Hand-woven fabrics have long been an integral part of the Malaysian lifestyle since the Second World
War . These artistic fabrics are used in daily life as well as in formal functions
and festive functions.
Weaving
is a process using ‘Loseng yarns’ and
‘era yarns’ and a handloom ‘kek’ . There are two different techniques, using modern
machinery or traditional technical machinery. Pahang's silk-woven fabrics are
still being produced in the traditional manner. These traditionally beautiful
creations have been kept alive and still generate high praise due the intricate
and attractive designs which have captivated artefact collectors all over the
world.
Historically,
Royal Pahang weave is worn by royalty and their families. However today, it is
mostly worn as traditional Malay ceremonial costumes during royal occasions,
weddings, the birth of a child and circumcision ceremonies, Malay festivals and
formal state functions. Recently, Royal Pahang weave has also been transformed
into apparel, fashion accessories such as handbags as well as home products
such as place mats, cushions, table runners and gift items.
Pahang silk weaving began
with the settling of Malays of the Bugis descent in the state. They migrated to
Pahang in 1722 to escape the cruelty of the Dutch occupation of the Indonesian
islands, in particular, Makassar. Escaping by way of Riau, the settlers soon
decided to make Pahang their abode of choice - bringing along their culture,
including their brand of silk making.
Among the refugees was Tok Tuan
Keraing Aji, who made his home in Kampung Mengkasar, Pekan. He was a master in
silk weaving – a renown purveyor of fine cloth and silk in the homeland he left
behind. Tuk Tuan Keraing Aji pioneered
new designs and motifs for the kain samping and kain sarung. Like all masters of trades, he
never failed to impart his knowledge and expertise to the women folk of his
village and the serounding area. Soon, his unique method of silk weaving
flourished in Pekan and today come to be known as a Tenun Pahang.
When he died, Tuk Tuan Keraing
Aji was laid to rest at the Muslim cemetery in Kampung Mengkasar. Through the centuries, the silk weaving art he taught
grew and was further refined and given a new lease on life by the Pahang State
Development Corporation (PKNK). Starting with the establishment of the Culture
Complex in Pulau Keladi, Pekan, the industry was rebranded with the royal status
on May 8, 2006 by HRH Tengku Mahkota of Pahang, Tengku Abdullah Sultan Ahmad
Shah.
